I’m Barry Nelson – driven to serve Ward 1 as Councillor and support a thriving community that we can all call home.

The issues you’ve told me are most important:

Traffic – Safer and more efficient transportation systems for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists

Development – Better enforcement of city policies to control building projects

Infrastructure – Use emerging technologies to improve roads, prevent flooding and control snow

Communication – Fresh new ways to inform and connect with residents

Community – More support for diversity, community center programs, parks, the arts, and environmental and heritage Conservation

Who I am: Over 33 years as Thornhill residents, my wife Christine and I have proudly raised 2 children and build our life here. My professional background has been diverse – from time in the Air Force to computer programming. But the majority of my career has been in leadership. My training and consulting company Practical Management of Canada has been run locally for the last 22 years and we’ve counted six municipalities and several large public sector organizations as clients, alongside many top Canadian and global corporations. My book, Growing Vital Skills, was published in 2003.

How I’ll do it: I’m an expert in guiding groups and organizations through changes in business, and I’ll apply my facilitation and negotiation expertise to find common agreement among a variety of stakeholders.

So, why elect Barry Nelson? My commitment to growing our community started decades ago. Some of the ways I’ve been involved include teaching job skills to unemployed people in York Region, extensive volunteering for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and acting as an Academic Advisor for Humber College’s Business Administration Program. I’ve also been President of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill, chaired Heritage Markham and facilitated Markham’s 10 Year Strategic Culture Plan supporting cultural diversity. There’s so much more that we can build together. To learn more about my plans and share your vision for a stronger Ward 1 visit barrynelsonward1.com
