The wait is almost over.

King Township announces the new municipal office is set to officially open for business next Tuesday.

The new municipal centre, located at 2585 King Rd., will open its doors to King residents at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 30 to replace the current city hall at 2075 King Rd.

For once in a long time, all township staff will be able to work under the same roof since the parks, recreation and culture services were temporarily located to the Nobleton Arena due to a lack of space at the current town hall.

“The facilities are magnificent. It’s a community hub. It’s not a place just about paying your tax,” said Mayor Steve Pellegrini.

The mayor said he looked forward to holding the first council meeting -- the last one of the current council -- at the new municipal building on Nov. 12.

“It’s a good way to acknowledge that this sitting council has made courageous decisions to build this new facility.”

The $13.1-million centre will house more than 100 staff members in the two-storey building.

Park and recreation is moving into the new municipal centre on Oct. 25 in preparation for the official opening on Oct. 30. Anyone who requires assistance can visit the reception at the Trisan Centre at 25 Dillane Dr., Schomberg, during the move.

The new centre includes a 6,000-square-foot multi-use gymnasium with sprung wood floor and a 3,000-square-foot York Regional Police substation, the first one in King Township.

“A great deal of time and effort went into getting the project to this point,” said Pellegrini. “We wanted to build a municipal centre the residents of King expect and deserve, while doing it in a financially responsible way. I’m very pleased the tender to construct it came in within budget.”

The township announced earlier this year it had sold the current site to Zancor Homes for $10.75 million. It will help pay for the construction of the new centre. (The all-in budget for Project MOVE is $21.5 million with the actual construction cost of $13.1 million.)

The rest of the funding comes from $1 million from a YRP capital contribution, $1.5 million from development charges, $4.5 million from the infrastructure reserve and $4 million from debenture.

The construction of the new centre started in the fall of 2017, following the demolition of the former Holy Name Catholic Elementary School at the site.
