Incumbent Mayor Margaret Quirk has been handed a second term by Georgina voters.

“I’m honoured that I got the public support to do that,” Quirk said after the unofficial results were posted about an hour after the polls closed.

“We’ll keep working together and move this forward,” Quirk said when asked about her priorities for the next term.

Quirk garnered 5,391 votes in a race that was arguably her’s to lose.

Boris Godzinesvski, however, posted a strong showing, with 2,253 votes going his way.

Susan Jagminas garnered 1,100 votes.

A close race for regional councillor and deputy mayor resulted in incumbent Naomi Davison losing her seat to former mayor Rob Grossi by 721 votes.

“This has been the most invigorating campaign of my life and I’ve been in a few campaigns,” Grossi, who received 4,175 votes, said.

Grossi said he was “honoured” to be “given a seat that my late friend Danny Wheeler sat in”.

Davison received 3,454 votes.

Originally trailing in the polls to first-timer Wayne Phillips, incumbent Frank Sebo was re-elected in Ward 4, garnering 944 votes to Phillips’ 865 and Greta Zinck’s 294.

Surprisingly, the ward with the most eligible voters had the most dismal showing in terms of voter turnout.

Mike Waddington was elected in Ward 1 with 991 votes, compared to incumbent Charlene Biggerstaff’s 648 and Glen Wittenberg’s 50.

On average, voter turnout for the past three elections in Georgina has run between 32 and 36 per cent, depending on the ward.

Voter turnout for this year’s election in Georgina was 26.73 per cent, down from 39.6 per cent in 2014.

The number of ballots cast was 9,047, which was down from 12,276 in 2014.

There were 10,521 ballots cast in the 2010 election.
