Leslie Street is getting a major overhaul.
The region is working on widening the major north-south thoroughfare between Wellington Street in Aurora to Mulock Drive in Newmarket from two to four lanes.
The project also includes widening St. Johns’ Sideroad between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street.
Local residents would be glad to know construction in the St. John’s Sideroad and Leslie Street area is coming to an end.
Work started in 2015 with the stretch between Broughton Lane and Mulock Drive, which is now complete.
Current construction is taking place between Don Hillock Drive to Broughton Lane is scheduled to be complete in summer 2019.
JUST THE FACTS:
- Work along this section was pushed back to the fall of 2017, once the majority of work along St. John’s Sideroad was complete.
- The construction budget for this stretch of Leslie Street between Don Hillock Drive to Broughton Lane is $24.3 million.
- Work that remains to be completed includes: widening of Leslie Street, paving, storm sewer installation and building two pedestrian underpasses that will connect with future trail systems in Aurora.
- One pedestrian underpass is located one just south of the Newmarket-Aurora boarder and will connect to a future trail network on the north side of St. John’s Sideroad. The second underpass is north of State Farm Way and will connect to the employment lands in the First Commerce Drive area.
- Plans for Leslie Street include: enhanced street lighting, on-road bike lanes, sidewalks, multi-use pathways and streetscaping.
