Put a few fire service vehicles in the driveway and watch folks swarm to your house.
Well over 1,000 people were expected to attend the annual Central York Fire Services open house Sept. 29 at the station located on Gorham Street in Newmarket.
The four hours or so spent hosting provides a chance for firefighters and volunteers to interact with the public while passing along tips on fire safety in and around the home. A similar event was held Sept. 22 in Aurora.
“I’ve always felt the big red trucks out front will bring the people in, so while the families are here, we’ll educate them,” said CYFS chief fire prevention officer Ryan Schell. “They can learn a lot of things.”
The theme of this year’s open house series is "Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware -- Fire Can Happen Anywhere," and leads into Fire Prevention Week.
Several displays, along with games and food were offered up for families in attendance.
And, of course, a chance to get up close with a fire truck.
