This year marks 100 years since bells tolled across Europe as the First World War came to an end. Four years of battle, death, carnage and heroism ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. More than 650,000 men and women from Canada and Newfoundland served during the war, more than 66,000 gave their lives and more than 172,000 were wounded. Hundreds of sons and daughters, fathers and mothers shipped out as soldiers and nurses in the name of creating a better world.

Help us commemorate those local men and women who fought during the First World War.

Over the past year, Library and Archives Canada worked to digitize military records of those who served during the First World War. The national library and archives created an online memorial featuring the stories of 100 people who personally experienced the war, using original military records, photos, historical library materials and census records.

We want to honour our own York 100 or more – and we need your help. Be it a family member, friend, neighbour or local hero, send us your pictures and stories of local men and women who served between 1914 and 1918. Pictures, military records, memories and stories can be sent to newsroom@yrmg.com by Oct. 19.

This is our 100. We will remember them.
