Ed Sackfield Arena and Fitness Studio (311 Valleymede Dr.) is being expanded. The new wing will include an NHL-sized ice pad, a fitness studio and aerobics room, change rooms and a walking track. The fitness studio is closed and the town is encouraging members to visit other Richmond Hill fitness studios. For safety reasons, parts of the site and park are closed and/or fenced off during construction.
JUST THE FACTS
- Construction began in September 2017.
- According to richmondhill.ca, the project has encountered challenges including weather delays throughout 2017, delays in delivery of construction supplies and other construction-related problems. As a result, the project will be completed in phases:

- Phase 2: (to be completed through 2019) - the arena expansion (including the fitness studio), multi-sports court, splash pad and north playground
- The NHL-sized ice rink is 200 by 85 ft.
- The rink is expected to be completed by early 2019, although, weather and other construction-related matters may affect the timeline.
- The town is not expecting to close the existing rink during construction but says it will notify users of any closures.
- The arena project budget including new fitness area, walking track and program rooms is more than $21 million. The cost for the arena is $16.5 million.
