New playground at Newmarket's George Richardson Park

George Richardson Park spans close to 30 hectares, following the blanks of the Holland River.

The park is home to a number of mature trees, streams, winding trails and wooden bridges along with a collection of soccer and baseball fields.

With adjacent sports fields and connections to the Tom Taylor Trail, the aged playground was a popular destination for families watching a sports game or bike riding along the trails.

According to the town, the 10-year-old park was due for rehabilitation and the new playground will have features for children of all ages and abilities.

Just the Facts:

• George Richardson Park runs along Bayview Parkway, between Davis Drive and Leslie Valley Drive.

• Upgrades are being made to the south park, north of Davis Drive.

• The park upgrade budget is about $130,000 and includes a new playground area, trail rehabilitation and concrete pads at the soccer field.

• Construction is scheduled to be complete by mid-September.

• Plans for the new park include: new park signs with a civic address for emergency response; new playground equipment and separate swing set area connected by an asphalt trail; more park benches, picnic tables and waste bins; a ramp from the trail to playground; and new trees planted throughout the park.

• The old sand surface is being replaced with an engineered wood fibre that is more accessible.

• Concrete pads are also being added to the soccer fields to level player benches and bleachers.
