The Town of Richmond Hill's chief administrative office, Neil Garbe, has been elected to the Association of Municipalities Ontario board of directors to serve on its large urban caucus.
Garbe was elected out of five elected officials and one municipal employee to the 2018-2020 board team at the annual AMO conference held in Ottawa from Aug. 19 to 22.
He will join 42 other members on the board of directors to help set policy for the association and serve as a key municipal leader in the province.
“I am honoured to represent my municipality on both the provincial stage as well as represent the issues that large municipalities face,” Garbe said.
Garbe said he’s eager to be on the board team and help address issues that are facing Richmond Hill and other larger municipalities. The front and centre issues include the private sales of cannabis, zoning enforcement and asset management.
“This is important as having someone with a seat at the table ensures Richmond Hill is represented on all government-related matters, at the municipal level (via peers) as well as provincially and federally,” the town spokesperson Carol Moore said in an email.
Garbe, who has more than 20 years of experience in municipal leadership, has served as the CAO of the Town of Richmond Hill since July 2015 after leaving his position as the Town of Aurora’s CAO.
Prior to that, he worked with the Regional Municipality of York for 12 years in progressive leadership roles including director, community planning and administration.
“I’m very excited to be part of the discussion in shaping how the province develops its legislation and regulations, and how the province interacts with the municipalities,” said Garbe.
AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments.
