A watermain break on Water Street will give drivers coming from the east headaches when travelling to the heart of Newmarket for the next few days

Town of Newmarket staff is working to fix the break, which happened the evening of Aug. 26. The area closed to traffic is Water Street from Prospect Street to Doug Duncan Drive.

"There was a large watermain break that caused the asphalt to break near the railway tracks on Water Street," said Newmarket’s director of public works services Chris Kalimootoo.

"The watermain break also caused the asphalt to buckle, creating debris at the entrance of the parking lot of the York Regional Police station and along Water Street and Doug Duncan Drive," he said.

Kalimootoo said just one resident went without water briefly and that water was restored after a short break.

Repairs in the area are ongoing.

The director said more information should be available later on Aug. 27.
