King Township celebrated the opening of the new playground at the Nobleton Community Sports Park with members of the Nobleton Lions Club on Aug. 20, a major step toward the final completion of the renovation project.

The expansion of the playground is part of the Phase II enhancement of the Nobleton Community Sports Park, which began in May 2018.

The $700,000 project is expected to be complete by the spring of 2019. It is some $31,000 below the approved budget, according to King Township Ward 2 Coun. David Boyd.

Besides the new playground, the renovation work includes reconstruction of two baseball diamonds and regrading of the surface level, for camping purposes.

The new playground opened on Aug. 8, and all elements at the park are now open to the public, with some construction work at the baseball diamond underway.

Crews are currently working on revitalizing the lower baseball diamond; reconstruction of the T-ball baseball diamond has been completed.

“The park is really transitioning into a great environment that I think will serve our Nobleton community well for generations to come,” Boyd said.

As a partner of the project, the Nobleton Lions Club has donated a total of $50,000 to the renovation work: $25,000 to the pavilion construction and $25,000 to the playground expansion.

In order to recognize the club’s contributions, King council approved in April to rename the community park “Nobleton Lions Community Park.” New signage is expected to put in place at the park soon.

“Nobleton Lions has been serving the Nobleton community for over 55 years,” Boyd said. “They’re just an outstanding club and very dedicated individuals to the community.”

The local club also helped build the original outdoor pool in Nobleton, which has served the community for decades, Boyd said.

Prior to Phase II construction, King had completed building a brand-new pool house, reconstructing the tennis court, and refurbishing the outdoor pool during Phase I construction of the project, which took place from 2016 to 2017.
