Rogers Hometown Hockey is dropping its puck in Aurora this season.

The weekly broadcast which stickhandles across Canada during the course of the NHL season skates into Aurora on Dec. 8-9 for its 10th stop of the 2018-19 season tour.

It will be the third York Region stop for Rogers Hometown Hockey which kicks off its fifth season Oct. 7 to 9 in Kitchener.

The program previously stopped in Newmarket in 2016 and Markham last year.

“I think it’s fabulous,” said Mayor Geoff Dawe, who said discussions were initiated about three months ago to bring the event to Aurora. “I have to admit I was a little bit jealous when Newmarket got it. So it’s nice to get on the list and selected.”

Dawe said the main venue has not been disclosed.

The Aurora stop will be highlighted by a broadcast doubleheader including the Montreal Canadiens at Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers.

The event is a family-oriented celebration of hockey with lots of activities aimed at entertaining youth and adults.

“It gets everybody out, especially the kids,” said Dawe. "We’re still really a small hockey town.”

The stop in Aurora kicks off an Ontario swing that also includes visits to Chatham-Kent, Mississauga and Collingwood in December.
