Get ready to roll east Markham.

A brand new $37-million transit hub will be coming to the area of Highway 7 and Ninth Line in the years to come as announced on Tuesday by various levels of government, as Mayor Frank Scarpitti, regional chair Wayne Emmerson, Markham-Stouffville MPP Paul Calandra and Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott were on hand to make the announcement.

The groundbreaking for what will be the Cornell bus terminal that will be an 11-bay bus terminal for York Region Transit and Viva buses with future provisions for GO Transit and Durham Regional Transit buses, is within walking distance of Markham-Stouffville Hospital and the Cornell Community Centre and Library.

“This is a very exciting time for York Region and the Government of Canada is proud to support the Viva system,” said Philpott.

“Today’s groundbreaking demonstrates York Region’s ongoing commitment to build a world-class transit system,” said Emmerson.

“Transportation hubs, like the Cornell Terminal, further strengthen the efficiency of our network and create more sustainable options for our growing communities.”

The Government of Canada is contributing $10.4 million of the cost of the project, with Ontario kicking in $10.8 million and York Region the balance of $15.6 million for a total cost of $36.8 million.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of the summer and the terminal is expected to open by the end of 2019.
