Frank Scarpitti running for Markham mayor again

More than 100 candidates registered for all elected positions in Markham

He says he’s “ready to go and ready to serve” asFrank Scarpitti is back in the mayor’s race again.

The longtime head of Markham’s municipality will be joined by four challengers in this year’s mayoral race as Steven Chen, Shan Hua Lu, Abdul Rahman Malik and Jawed Syed all take aim at the man who has been in Markham mayor’s chair since 2006.

Scarpitti, who was re-elected mayor in 2010 and 2014, said his decision to enter the race last Thursday, the day before nominations closed, was “not deliberate,” but due in part to this year’s “truncated” nomination process that saw candidates limited to a May 1-July 27 nomination period for the Oct. 22 municipal election. Previously, candidates could sign up to run on Jan. 1.

He also said it was “no secret” he was mulling over running for the York Regional chair position, but after “serious consideration,” decided he could best serve and have “the greatest impact as the mayor of Markham. I will continue to be a strong voice on regional issues.”

Scarpitti said “there is still lots to do in the city of Markham.” He said his goals for the next four years, if re-elected, are to “continue to manage the finances, to manage the growth and look forward to the opening of the new campus of York University. I know we’ve got a couple of proposals in the wings and I’m hoping Markham will be successful in attracting investment to our city.”

There are more than 100 candidates running for all positions in Markham, so residents will have to pay close attention when they go to the polls to mark their ballots in the municipal election on Oct. 22.
