The Town of Georgina has broken ground on the new Pefferlaw Fire Station 1-8.

The mayor and members of council, fire Chief Ron Jenkins and members of the Georgina Fire and Rescue Services attended a special sod turning event at the site of the new station last Wednesday.

"This is a very exciting time for our town and especially the fire services and the community of Pefferlaw, as today we officially

break ground on the building of our new fire station," said Chief Jenkins.

Council approved the design of the new fire station in December 2017 and will incorporate the former Cooke’s United Church, which stands adjacent to the current hall.

At 10,690 square feet, the facility will include new apparatus bays, gear and training rooms, and office space.

Station 1-8 will also feature a rain water harvesting system that will allow rainwater to be collected for the filling and washing  of trucks.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $3.7 million with substantial construction to be complete by July 31, 2019.
