Markham council appoints Khalid Usman to be Ward 7 councillor

Vacancy created with election of former councillor Logan Kanapathi to MPP

Markham city council has appointed Khalid Usman to the position of Ward 7 councillor for Markham until the end of the current term on Nov. 30, 2018.

The vacancy for Ward 7 was created with the election of former councillor Logan Kanapathi to the position of MPP for the riding of Markham-Thornhill. At the June 26 council meeting, the Ward 7 seat was declared vacant in accordance with provincial legislation and Markham's council vacancy policy.

Usman was a Ward 7 candidate from the 2014 municipal election. Usman served three consecutive terms (from 1998 to 2006) on Markham city council as the Ward 7 councillor. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Mayor's Seniors Hall of Fame Award for his service and leadership in the community. He has been an active member of Markham's race relations committee, a former director of Markham District Energy board of directors, and a current member of the York Regional Police Services board.

Usman served as the chair of York Region's Peace Tree initiative, chair of Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, and has made significant contributions to the international community, as one of the founding directors of the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship. He is a recipient of the community service award from the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
