The race for Whitchurch-Stouffville mayor added a new entrant before the July 27 deadline. Local businessperson and former NHL player and coach Keith Acton declared his candidacy for mayor.

“I am honoured to announce my candidacy for mayor of Whitchurch-Stouffville. My career as a small-business owner, NHL coach, and a player for 15 seasons has taught me leadership skills that I will bring to town council,” he said.

“Throughout my campaign, I hope to build the trust of Stouffville residents with a positive campaign that will showcase proven leadership and effective teamwork. As a former hockey player and coach I know how important respect and leadership are to getting the job done."

Acton said the town has many challenges facing it and that he looks forward to tackling them.

“I will be a constant advocate for the community and I will bring respect back to the town and council,“ he said.

Acton received an endorsement from Markham-Stouffville MPP Paul Calandra who worked and organized, along with Acton, to raise money at the Hockey Night in Stouffville event.

“I have always been impressed with his love for his hometown and his passion for public service. As mayor, I know Keith will serve the town proudly and admirably,” he said.
