Two Newmarket wards acclaimed as election candidate registration closes

Three vying for mayor, three gunning for regional council, wards 6 and 7 incumbents go unchallenged

The deadline to register as a candidate for the municipal election in October is up.

Newmarket voters will have plenty of choice when heading to the polls this fall to vote for one mayor, a regional councillor, one ward councillor and a school board trustee.

Three names are in the running for the mayor’s seat as current Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen retires. It’s also a three-way race for the regional councillor position.

While the final registered candidate list won’t be finalized until July 30, Ward 6 and Ward 7 will be acclaimed with no one challenging incumbants Kelly Broome and Christina Bisanz.
