Environment Canada lifted its severe thunderstorm warning for York Region at 5:08 p.m. July 26, but a watch remains in effect for the northern part of the region.

A large amount of rain and some hail fell in parts of the region in the afternoon and, according to Environment Canada, more of that type of weather is possible into the evening in the northern areas.

Strong wind gusts and frequent lightning are also possible.

The risk will end by mid-evening, Environment Canada says. The watch ended for the southern part of the region at 5:14 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
