Robertson Rouse will be the next deputy chief of York Regional Police.
The announcement was made at the July 23 York Region Police Services Board meeting and will take effect Sept. 10.
Rouse is a 30-year veteran of the services and has experience in leading a "significant operational area", namely Markham, and in units including sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence.
Rouse began his career in the Canadian Armed Forces and has also acted as the Markham African Caribbean Association co-chair.
"I am deeply honoured to be selected to serve in the capacity of deputy chief," he said. "I recognize that the badge I wear is a symbol of trust that the community places in the police."
Police Chief Eric Jolliffe said he expects Rouse to bring "incredible skill" to the position.
