MPP Stephen Lecce for King-Vaughan riding sat down with The York Region Media Group this week to talk about his priorities in the community.
1) Why did you run for office?
I ran with a mission to make life affordable for working people in King-Vaughan and to restore hope for the next generation that increasingly feels or felt that they couldn’t achieve their full God-given potential. I want to restore that hope and I want to make sure for working people, for those who work very hard, which in the riding of King-Vaughan we’re blessed to have a great diversity of experience, and I want those people to know that they’re going to have a government that is going to fight for them, lower their taxes and put money back in their pockets and improve the social services that I know we depend on be it health care or better education or better jobs. This is the mission. My central mission is to make life affordable and unleashing the potential of every single person in this community.
2) What do you want to achieve in the riding?
King-Vaughan candidates discuss issues facing riding
I want to make sure people in this community that work hard are able to take home more of their pay. For me, as a Progressive Conservative, I really believe that individuals increasingly are overtaxed, they’re working harder, they're taking home less, their hydro bills are out of control and the cost of living is very high. That’s a direct result of mismanagement by the former Liberal government. I want to turn a page now, and start to move the province in a direction where people save some of their money, they can retire with dignity, they raise a family, and a young people can afford a home.
3) Can you name the three most important things facing the residents in your riding of King-Vaughan?
I’d say cost of living. Priority No. 1 is making life affordable for families in this community. For the middle class in King-Vaughan, it is very difficult to get by. The second thing is health care. I want to first off deliver the hospital for Vaughan. It is my single most important local priority to deliver that hospital on time on budget after some years of delay. So I want that hospital which is going to be an incredible hospital for our community to be part of the solution to reduce hallway medicine in York Region … The third is thing is I want to make sure that we’ll reduce congestion.
4) If you were to have one moment with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, what would you ask?
I think I would ask him why he believes Federal Liberal government should impose a tax on working people, carbon tax on everyday middle-class people, raising the cost of groceries, gasolines, hydro.
5) Can you tell me one thing that the public doesn’t know about you yet?
My Italian nonnas, they taught me well as a chef. I’m a reasonable cook. I enjoy cooking, I enjoy hosting when I have time, which is never these days. But I can make a really good pesto.
