A fire in one of Toronto's historic buildings on Monday evening may have been deliberately set.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg says a fire alarm went off at Old City Hall just after 8 p.m. in the building across from the current city hall.

He says after crews quickly got the fire under control, firefighters had "cause to believe" that the cause is suspicious.

Fire officials say there is a significant amount of water damage caused by sprinklers going off inside the building.

No injuries were reported.

The building, which opened in September 1899, currently houses several provincial courts.

Pegg could not say if scheduled court proceedings would proceed on Tuesday. (CP24)
