A large crowd was on hand for the official opening of Markham's newest community and recreation centre, the Aaniin, on 14th Avenue, which boasts many unique features to stimulate, entertain, grow and have fun.

To start with, the $54-million monstrosity has three pools – including a 6-lane, 25-metre pool alongside a splash and play pool complete with a slow-current walking lane, also known as the Lazy River. There is also a therapy pool to aid those in physical recovery programs.

The rest of the glass and steel dominated facility offers up space and progressive activities for every age group. The atrium is where hundreds gathered to watch England lose to Belgium at a World Cup viewing event on a giant screen Saturday morning.

The virtual reality headset and game system in the youth room, alongside a traditionally Canadian table hockey game, were a constant source of chatter and laughter. One of the unique features at this facility is the multi-sensory room, featuring specially designed tools and activities including a light and sound wall, which can be effective for those on the autistic spectrum as well as others.

Local and international cooking classes and demonstrations are available in the large, restaurant-inspired chrome kitchen on the main floor.

"The building is a connector for the whole community to get together and engage in activities socially, spiritually and physically," said Anthony Ierulli, Markham's south area recreation manager.

Aaniin translates from Ojibway to "welcome", and everyone was at Saturday's official opening.
