A fire ban has been issued for northern York Region.

Effective immediately, fire chiefs from the municipalities of East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Newmarket, Aurora and Whitchurch-Stouffville have nixed all outdoor and open-air burning, including recreational fires.

The Fire Protection and Fire Prevention Act and local bylaw dictate this ban will remain in effect until extreme dry conditions improve. Dry conditions make it easier for a fire to spread, for example, along dry grass.

The ban has been issued for the protection of property, public safety and safety of firefighters that would have to respond to an incident started by the unlawful burning of materials.
