The first food market in Canada to be located in a shopping centre will debut this September.

Newmarket’s Upper Canada Mall, owned and operated by Oxford Properties, will unveil Market & Co. this fall, featuring a 40,000- square-foot space that will bring together 18-best-in-class local merchants and first-to-market eateries in York Region to create a food experience.

"With the growing popularity and prominence of urban food markets worldwide, we saw an opportunity to pioneer this concept within a shopping centre,” Oxford Properties retail lead Bradley Jones said. “We have designed the market so guests can purchase quality groceries and specialty items to take home, enjoy food experiences at the market and take part in special events at the state-of-the-art, built-in demonstration kitchen.”

Food brands and eateries that will be making their debut include first-to-market Canadian brands Bake Three Fifty, FloralEscence, Humble Roots Organic, Ma’s Best Quality Soups, Newmarket Olive Oil, Our Farm Organic Bakery, Pier 87 Fish Market & Grill, Ray Woodey’s Craft Chippery, Seed to Sausage Meatery, Sweet Jesus and Village Juicery.

Three full-service restaurants including Canada’s first MidiCi The Neapolitan Pizza Company, Union Chicken, which is chef Michael Angeloni’s celebrated spit-fired rotisserie chicken eatery, and Amano Kitchen, a seasonally inspired Italian restaurant, also developed by Angeloni, will be opening.

But don’t count out local favourites including Vince’s Market and Amadeus Patisserie and well-known brands such as Starbucks and Sugar King Factory, which will also be joining the mix.

Market & Co. will also house Kitchen & Co., a built-in demonstration kitchen that will host regular events, pop-ups and workshops to provide guests with foodie experiences and opportunities to learn from their local market merchants.

Upper Canada invested $60 million to bring this project together at its location, 17600 Yonge St. in Newmarket.

In order to support the new market, Upper Canada is hosting a career fair on July 28 to fill 250 full-time positions. The one-day career fair will take place in Yonge Court, near entrance 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
