Cool off from the sun by swimming in a pool powered by it.
That might soon be the case in Mississauga, which has started a pilot project to examine the use of solar panels to heat outdoor pools.
City staff will monitor the panels’ performance and collect information to prepare for future solar panel installations at other indoor and outdoor pools.
The Lions Club of Credit Valley is home to the city’s first outdoor pool to be heated by solar panels with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
City staff will monitor the panels’ performance and collect information to prepare for future solar panel installations at other indoor and outdoor pools. The installation took a month, and the city anticipates a yearly reduction of 10.7 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
By comparison, the average passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.
The city says the pilot project demonstrates Mississauga’s leadership in green initiatives, aiming to transform the city to “net zero” carbon use.
