Aurora’s newest turf surface has been officially welcomed into the family of outdoor sports facilities in the municipality.

The new artificial turf soccer field at Stewart Burnett Park was officially opened June 24.

The FIFA regulation field is the official home for Aurora FC and its programs. It includes seating for 500 fans and includes an electronic scoreboard.

“Aurora is centre ice in York Region and the facilities for the most part are excellent,” said Roy Cohen, president of Aurora FC/Aurora Youth Soccer Club. “Stewart Burnett is just another piece as Aurora becomes more of a sports market.

“We need facilities and there is nothing wrong with having world class facilities for a world class town. It is a fantastic field and we’re very happy with it.”

The Stewart Burnett field, which actually opened for play in late April and has potential to remain open into late fall months, gives Aurora yet another turf field and the ability to withstand weather conditions and extend playing seasons.

When complete in 2019, the full park will also include a splash pad, playground, washrooms and a trail connection into the new wildlife park.
