The Federal Holidays Act states when July 1 is a Sunday, July 2 becomes the legal Canada Day holiday.
Most city facilities and operations will be running on a normal Sunday schedule on July 1, and will operate on holiday hours or will be closed on Monday, July 2, 2018.
Here’s what’s open and closed in York Region:
OPEN
Services
- GO Transit, (Sunday July 1 is observed as a holiday. Service on Monday July 2 runs according to the Saturday schedule). Visit GO Transit for more details.
- YRT services will operate on a regular Sunday schedule on Sunday, July 1. On Monday, July 2 the service will operate on a Saturday schedule. Visit YRT for more information.
Retail
- Most major malls, including Upper Canada Mall, Vaughan Mills and Markville Mall are open.
- Under York Region’s shopping bylaw, retailers can open every day except Christmas. Check your favourite store for hours.
CLOSED
Recreation
- Most recreation facilities and community centres in York Region are affected by Canada Day on Sunday rather than Monday. Most of these facilities and centres are closed Sunday, July 1 with some exceptions. The Gorman Outdoor Pool in Newmarket is open 1--5 p.m. Sunday. Also, the Thornhill Outdoor Pool in Vaughan is open Sunday.
Services
- Canada Post is closed on national holidays, with no collection or delivery of mail on those days. This year, Canada Post’s holiday is on Monday July 2 and post offices will be closed. There will be no collection or delivery of mail.Post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
- Most municipal buildings, including town and city offices, most libraries, community and seniors centres will be closed for regular business on Monday July 2 for Canada Day.
- Canada Day is observed Monday July 2 at most banks. TD Bank posted they are closed Sunday and Monday.
