The City of Sherbrooke has ramped up its fight against the emerald ash borer and will implement several new actions over the next few weeks to effectively fight against the invasive and destructive insect.

In recent days, many traps have appeared on ash trees in several public areas of Sherbrooke and a total of 44 traps will be installed using a bucket truck. These traps will help in detecting the insect’s presence.

At the same time, the City is launching an experimental project to control the borer with a fungus, Beauveria bassiana. No less than 30 experimental traps will be installed in 15 ash trees in Olivier-Chauveau Park, where the borer is already present. In each tree, an initial trap will guide the borer to come into contact with the fungus, whose active agent is toxic to the insect. A second trap will capture the bugs to verify the effectiveness of the treatment. A follow-up will be carried out by the company GDG Environnement, the City’s partner in the project.

In the next few days, contractor Strathmore Landscaping will start processing more than 450 public ash trees with TreeAzin ©, the only registered, safe, effective, and authorized product for the control of Emerald Ash Borer in Quebec. See full story in the Wednesday, June 20 edition of The Record.
