There’s a two-way race so far for York Region’s top political job, which will be determined in a historic vote this fall.
For the first time, residents will vote for regional chair through legislation adopted by the provincial government.
Up to now, the $217,000-a-year position has only been selected by mayors and regional councillors, a process critics complained was undemocratic.
Now a resident of Pefferlaw in Georgina, he was previously a longtime mayor of Whitchurch-Stouffville.
Racco, a Thornhill resident, is a former Vaughan councillor and Liberal MPP.
Voters will decide who will be regional chair during the municipal elections on Oct. 22.
The deadline to register as a candidate is July 27.
