One of Toronto’s most picturesque summer destinations will be now be served by TTC buses starting Sunday, a change the city hopes will attract more visitors.

In a news conference Sunday morning, Mayor John Tory, Ward 36 Councillor Gary Crawford, and TTC chair Josh Colle announced the launch of 175 Bluffer’s Park bus service, which will give visitors access to the Scarborough Bluffs.

“We want people from Toronto, many of whom I would guess have never been here before to see this because they didn’t think you could get here. They didn’t know how to get here,” said Tory, who described the park as one of the most scenic parts of Toronto.

The project was approved by the TTC board in January. Currently, the only way to get to the park is a two-kilometre walk or bike ride down a steep roadway. Limited parking, which quickly fills up before noon during the warm months, has also been a challenge for many visiting the park.

“We want people from across the city to have an easy and safe convenient way to get to this beautiful part of the city,” said Tory. He added that the poor accessibility to the park, which has been a barrier for seniors and people with disabilities, is unacceptable.

Tory believes the pilot project will be successful.

Buses will run between Kennedy Station and Bluffer’s Park every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekends and holidays until Oct. 6. There will be two stops: one at the beginning of the park and the other one located near the beach.
