The northbound lane of Yonge St. has reopened ahead of the morning commute as crews continue to tame a water main break at Yonge and Wellington Sts. -- but between King St. and Wellington St., the southbound lane is still closed.

The break happened around 3 a.m., according to Toronto police, and as of 4:50 a.m., crews were on scene working on the problem. Police said water is bubbling up onto the street, turning the stairs to the subway at Melinda St. into a waterfall. That subway exit and the Commerce Court entrance have been closed by the TTC.

Yonge St. was originally closed both ways between Wellington St. W. and Melinda St.

Police from 51 and 52 divisions have cordoned off the area while Toronto Water crews work on a fix.

TTC officials say that drains within King Station are doing their job so far and do not anticipate a full station closure. They continue to monitor the situation. The 97 Yonge St. bus continues to divert southbound via Adelaide, Church and Wellington Sts.
