Temporary parking exemptions are now available online for Newmarket residents.

Town council recently approved a permit system allowing residents and overnight visitors to apply for a temporary parking exemption online. The exemption allows individuals to park their vehicles on the road only in areas where parking longer than three hours is not permitted.

“Residents may wish to apply for a parking exemption during the holidays or when hosting a social event,” Newmarket’s corporate services commissioner Esther Armchuk said. “This will provide guests the opportunity to leave their cars parked on the road overnight.”

However, the exemption does not allow individuals to park in parking zones, in front of hydrants, in fire routes or in bike lanes.

Exemptions are also not available from Nov. 1 to April 15 when the town’s winter parking restrictions are in effect.

Those seeking an overnight exemption can make the request by filling out an online application form. Once requested, parking enforcement officers notified and the exemption is active.

Residents are limited to a maximum of 15 exemptions per year.

The exemptions are free until Jan. 1, 2019 when a fee of $5 for 24 hours and $15 for five days will be introduced.
