With a new year comes new focus on what is to come for the Town of Richmond Hill. Here are five things Richmond Hill can expect in 2018.

  1. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction will ramp up in 2018 to create the vivaNext rapid transit project on Yonge Street, from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive and from Levendale Road to 19th Avenue. Utilities work will continue as road widening begins.

  2. The town will continue to advocate for the subway extension to Richmond Hill centre, insisting it should be the top priority of Metrolinx. The Yonge North extension is key to becoming an urban growth centre and should be operating no later than 2031.

  3. With the legalization of cannabis set for 2018, Richmond Hill, along with all Ontario municipalities, will be faced with a number of unknowns and will have to sort out bylaw enforcement, policing, zoning, public education and more.

  4. The provincial election is scheduled to be held on or prior to June 7, 2018. Progressive Conservative candidates include Daisy Wai, Richmond Hill and Michael Parsa, Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill. Liberal candidates include Reza Moridi, Richmond Hill and Naheed Yaqubian, Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill.

  5. The 2018 municipal election will be held Oct. 22 when voters will elect a mayor, two regional and local councillors, six ward councillors, a school trustee and the regional chairperson.
