With a new year comes new focus on what is to come for the Town of Newmarket. Here are five things Newmarket can expect in 2018.

  1. A push to redevelop the Davis Drive and Yonge Street corridor. The town aims to attract improved housing options, public places and breathing spaces to build on the area’s sense of community.

  2. A focus on strengthening the town’s business environment. The town has celebrated the expansion of the MARS factory and coming of Celestica to town and will commit to exploring what needs to be offered to attract more businesses.

  3. The fate of the historic clock tower on Main Street. A three week Ontario Municipal Board hearing is set for Aug. 7 to 27, 2018 where it will be determined if allowances under the Heritage Act and zoning bylaws will be granted to allow proposed development plans to move forward.

  4. The provincial election is scheduled to be held on or prior to June 7, 2018. So far, Progressive Conservative candidate Charity McGrath and incumbent Liberal MPP Chris Ballard have their hats in the race.

  5. The 2018 municipal election will be held Oct. 22 when voters will elect a mayor, one regional councillor, seven ward councillors, a school trustee and the regional chairperson. This will also be the first time the town offers electronic voting.
