With a new year comes new focus on what is to come for the Town of Aurora. Here are five things Aurora can expect in 2018.

  1. Aurora residents can expect to see the construction begin on Phase 1 of the wildlife park that has been discussed for more than 20 years. The 2018 capital budget has $1 million earmarked for the project.

  2. The continuation of the development of the Cultural Precinct. The restoration of the Aurora armoury and draft design for Library Square have been approved and 2018 should see final designs as well as other initiatives as the town looks to make the area a destination.

  3. More protection for stable neighbourhoods. Town staff are expected to review existing
bylaws and guidelines intended to protect existing residential neighbourhoods from growth and infill development early in the new year.

  4. The provincial election is scheduled to be held on or prior to June 7, 2018. So far, Progressive Conservative candidate Charity McGrath and incumbent Liberal MPP Chris Ballard have their hats in the race for Newmarket-Aurora and PC candidate Michael Parsa and Liberal candidate Naheed Yaqubian for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill.

  5. The 2018 municipal election will be held Oct. 22 when voters will elect a mayor, two regional and local councillors, six ward councillors, a school trustee and the regional chairperson.
