York Region commuters will have more options to travel to and from Toronto, as the province adds all-day weekday service on the Barrie GO rail line.

Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca and Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard made the announcement Dec. 12 at Aurora GO Station. Starting Jan. 2, the province is introducing new midday and evening weekday service between Union and Aurora stations -- nearly doubling the number of weekly trips on the line.

Combined with existing service, commuters on the Barrie GO line will be offered all-day train service, seven days a week.

Service improvements include a new, about hourly, two-way service between Union and Aurora stations during the midday and evenings, and afternoon and late evening trips between Bradford and Union stations. Trains will not south from Aurora between the 2:41 p.m. train and the 8:41 p.m. departure.

Hourly weekend GO rail service begins Dec. 30, while all GO trains will service the new Downsview Park GO Station, which connects to the TTC Line 1 subway extension to York Region. For commuters north of Aurora, timed GO bus connections will offer access to GO train services at Aurora station.

Additionally, commuters from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area will only have to pay a TTC fare of $1.50 when they use a PRESTO card to transfer between GO and TTC, starting January 2018.

The province is investing $21.3 billion to transform GO transit from a commuter transit service to a regional rapid transit system. Weekly trips on the GO rail network are expected to grow from 1,500 in 2015 to 6,000 by 2025.
