City of Saskatoon asking public for advice on ride-hailing companies

Survey comes after province talks about changing legislation to welcome Uber, Lyft

The City of Saskatoon wants to hear the public's opinion on ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft.

In last month's throne speech, the provincial government outlined its plans to make it easier for the companies to set up in Saskatchewan, especially when it comes to insurance and licensing. It will be up to municipalities to draft local bylaws to govern the companies.

While the City has already met with the taxi industry on the issue, council also wants to hear from residents. An online survey has been set up on the City of Saskatoon website and paper copies are available in city hall on the main floor lobby.

The city said it wants to create a level-playing field between taxi drivers and ride-hailing companies. Many taxi companies have expressed concern that they will be held to a higher standard for training and insurance than companies like Uber or Lyft.

The province said it believes ride-hailing companies may help to decrease Saskatchewan's impaired driving rate, especially in rural areas.

The survey will be available until Friday, November 17.
