The number of subway closures due to TTC inspections, repairs and upgrades will jump to 43 next year, up from 35 this year, the TTC says in a new report.

The closures will mean more disruption for riders, forcing them to alternate routes including shuttle buses. The TTC says the inconvenience - mostly on weekends, when there are fewest users - is necessary to have safe, reliable and efficient service the rest of the year.

The increase is primarily to allow construction of the Yonge St.-Eglinton Ave. interchange station for the new Eglinton Crosstown LRT line. The closures will also allow TTC staff to continue installing the automatic train control (ATC) signalling system, which will allow the agency to run more trains at higher speeds and with more reliable travel times, and to perform routine "state of good repair" maintenance.

The TTC says not all the work can be done overnight when the subway is closed, adding that one full weekend closure adds working time equivalent to five weeks of night work.

In addition to closures, the TTC is planning seven Sunday subway openings after the normal 8 a.m. start.

TTC will alert riders before each closure.
