A reader asked:
When will the subway make its way to Vaughan? Late 2017? And any news on the Yonge north extension into Thornhill and Richmond Hill?
Our answer:
The Yonge Spadina subway extension, the six-stop extension that extends from Downsview station and reaches the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stop, officially opens to the public to ride on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017.
As far as the Yonge north extension into Thornhill and Richmond Hill, proponents of the extension say it's getting closer all the time, but it's still a long way off before shovels go in the ground.
But the York North Subway group made up of Vaughan Thornhill Coun. Alan Shefman, Markham Thornhill Coun. Valerie Burke and Richmond Hill Coun. Godwin Chan say with $55 million from the province and $36.3 million committed from the feds for design and engineering studies for the transit extension, along with a partnership from Metrolinx, the TTC, the City of Toronto and York Region, movement on the extension is real.
"The Yonge Street north extension is tied to the City of Toronto relief line project," Shefman said. He added it will take about 18 to 24 months to complete the design and engineering studies. "Our goal must be to secure the next funding within a year," he said.
