On October 20, 2017, over 1100 people attended Hospice Vaughan’s Giving Thanks Gala at the Terrace Banquet Centre. Proceeds from the sold out event will enable Hospice Vaughan to continue to provide compassionate support to individuals and their families, coping with a life limiting illness or dealing with the loss of a loved one.
This evening also served as the formal launch of Hospice Vaughan’s “Better Ending” capital campaign in support of their new Centre of Excellence for Hospice and Palliative Care. This state-of-the-art facility will include a 10-bed residential hospice, family support and bereavement services, and visiting hospice services; and will serve as a community hub that will support research and educate on palliative care best practices. Hospice Vaughan anticipates breaking ground this fall, with a goal of opening the doors to the new Hospice in the spring of 2019. The campaign has already seen a tremendous response from the community.
Hospice palliative care is in integral and essential part of a community and its core healthcare needs, and it is currently a gap in our community. Hospice Vaughan’s “Better Ending” campaign is focused on the blunt yet important message that everyone deserves a good death, surrounded by family in a peaceful environment. The new Hospice Vaughan facility will support so many people in our community when they are at their most vulnerable, for generations to come.
Recently the Federal Government through the Ministry on Health and Long-term Care, announced a new program to support the creation of new and expanded hospices across Ontario. With this program, Hospice Vaughan is eligible to receive up to $2 million to help fund the capital costs of building its new Hospice. This capital funding announcement along with the $1.05 million in annual operational funding announced in 2016, provides a foundation for the community to build upon, in order for Hospice Vaughan to realize it’s vision of a 10-bed residential hospice in the City of Vaughan.
Hospice Vaughan’s Gala and Auction was an incredible success thanks to corporate sponsors, community ticket sales, donated auction items and raffle prizes and the countless volunteers that helped to plan, coordinate and run the event.
