Is the route you take to work, school, shopping, to visit family and friends, or to get your kids to their extracurricular activities jammed with traffic?

Were you hoping the road would be widened to accommodate more vehicles, especially as the region grows?

York Region is now saying it is $1.5 billion short on its forecasted 10-year capital roads budget and plans to delay 56 projects beyond 2031.

That doesn’t include funding gaps for other transportation needs such as the extension of the Yonge subway to Richmond Hill and new rapid transit projects, Brian Titherington, director of transportation and infrastructure planning, said.

Last year, the region adopted a transportation master plan with a long list of roads projects to handle population growth.

But now, the region is warning it doesn’t have the money to pay for all those projects.

The region will have to look for other solutions to handle traffic such as more public transit, new technologies, and encouraging residents to travel at non-peak times and to carpool, Titherington said.

See if the road you travel is on the list of those the region doesn’t think it will be able to get to before 2031.
