After completing a merger earlier this year to create one of the largest municipally-owned electricity providers in Canada, Alectra Inc. appears set to grow again.
Alectra formed with the merger of Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream and the acquisition of Hydro One Brampton.
Now the City of Guelph wants in — announcing it will begin merger negotiations with Alectra Inc. after more than a year of gathering community input, research and financial analysis.
Mississauga was the majority shareholder of Enersource, Markham, Barrie and Vaughan controlled PowerStream and Hamilton and St. Catharines were the principle shareholders of Horizon.
The provincial government acquired Hydro One Brampton from the City of Brampton in 2001.
The amalgamation and purchase of these utilities created North America’s second largest municipally-owned electric utility company.
It serves some one million customers, including residents in Mississauga and Brampton.
