Cities have the power to define countries and continents as they are the cultivators of innovation, culture and creativity. Attractive buildings, signature landscapes and engaging public spaces are important elements in shaping a city that is dynamic, distinctive and welcoming. City building is about creating a sense of place through thoughtful and intelligent planning. The most intriguing places in the world are a fusion of function and beauty. This is precisely what we are achieving through the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC).

We are embracing this unique opportunity to build a downtown core that is truly world-class and attractive to residents, visitors and the thousands of people who will work within the VMC. Motivated by the concept that fulfilment and happiness come through connecting with one's surroundings, we are building a place that people are excited to be a part of.

Next month, the City of Vaughan will be hosting the Urban Design Awards to highlight recent projects that have contributed to our growth and identity. These awards reflect our commitment to excellence and innovation in city building. As Vaughan continues to transform, it is important to recognize how physical structures and spiritual dimensions intersect to provide a meaningful experience. It is equally important to express gratitude to people who offer their talent to make Vaughan the place to be. The awards will acknowledge the contribution made by individuals and businesses that embrace the present while remaining historically significant in the future.

Our civic pride is second to none. The businesses and people that help shape Vaughan have a tremendous impact in our community. It is critical to consider the importance of architecture as a contributor to our well-being, heritage and environment. Creating unique spaces that define the very essence of life in our city is a way of manifesting our authentic spirit. Together, we've achieved great success and the best is yet to come.
