York Regional Police Services Board elects new chair and vice chair

The York Regional Police Services Board has elected Mayor of the Town of East Gwillimbury Virginia Hackson as its chair until January 2018.

Chair Hackson has served on the Board since 2012 and as Vice Chair since 2014.

She was elected as mayor of the Town of East Gwillimbury in October 2010 and re-elected in 2014 for a further four-year term. Until her election as mayor, she served the people of East Gwillimbury as a councillor for three terms, joining Town Council in 2001.

In accepting the position of chair, mayor Hackson, stated that “we will work hard to make sure we meet our legislative requirements under the Police Services Act and that we are open and transparent in our decision-making and in our processes”.

Chair Hackson thanked her colleagues on the Board for their continuing support and looks forward to ensuring that public safety and strong police oversight continue to be the Board’s priorities.

The Board also also elected John Molyneaux as its vice chair until January 2018.

Molyneaux has served on the York Regional Police Services Board since November 2010 and also serves on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards.

Molyneaux was appointed as the fire chief of the town of Newmarket Fire Department in 1994 and was appointed as fire chief of the Central York Fire Services in 2002. He also served as regional fire coordinator from 1997 until his retirement in 2009.

In accepting the position of vice chair, Molyneaux thanked his colleagues on the board for their trust and for electing him in this position. Molyneaux also recognized the police service for being a leader in the policing community.

The Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board is a seven-member civilian board that oversees the York Regional Police and is comprised of one member as head of the Municipal Council, three members are appointed by resolution of Regional Council and three by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
