As mentioned on the Kleinburg Village's Binder Twine Fest’s website, “[The fest] began in the late 1800′s when farmers came to the community to buy twine to bind their sheaves of wheat together.” It was Charlie Shaw, owner of Shaw’s Hardware Store in Kleinburg, who added food and entertainment to the mix—having these available for the visiting farmers—which eventually led to the birth of and an annual celebration, continuing until his death in 1931. In 1967, the festival was revived and, as a result of its success, became an annual event again. Today, the event is still celebrated and snapd was lucky enough to once again be a part of the history this year.
This year, the annual festival—which was run entirely by over 800 volunteers from the community—was celebrated on September 16th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The area was buzzing with kids, parents and grandparents who came together to either relive their traditions or make new ones. The day’s schedule was extremely exhilarating as it featured activities for everyone to enjoy. Great food, unique crafts, uplifting entertainment, Olde Tyme activities and juried craft exhibitors were some of the awesome features of the day’s schedule. And probably one of the highlight of the event, was the unique Queen Contest where eligible “young ladies” (age 16 to eternity) call a hog, flip pancakes, hammer nails and even milk a cow! The first official duty of the newly crowned Binder Twine Queen is to draw the winning ticket for the festival’s Quilt Raffle.
Managing to be another success (no surprise), we can’t wait to see next year’s festival. To learn more, please visit: www.kleinburgvillage.ca/events
