Golfers of every ability gathered on the green at Eagle's Nest Golf Club recently to participate in the Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua Annual Charity Golf Classic. With a drive to inspire positive change, participants hit the fairways in support of more than 150 charities and not-for-profit organizations.

The Maurizio Bevilacqua Charity Golf Classic - together with the Mayor's Gala - has raised more than $6.4 million since 2011. Funds have gone directly to groups that provide essential services in the City of Vaughan and beyond, including youth, seniors, special needs and education organizations, women's centres, arts and cultural initiatives, and sports groups.

Support from the Spirit of Generosity has been directed to many initiatives and programs including providing iPads for children with autism, the expansion of hospice programs, assisting victims of abuse and a new home for adults with special needs, to name a few.

"I am extremely grateful to the groups and individuals who play a vital role in making our city a kind, caring and compassionate place," Bevilacqua said. "This golf tournament, along with our Gala, is a demonstration of the spirit of generosity that defines Vaughan - which is people coming together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I also want to extend my appreciation to Alectra president and CEO Brian Bentz for once again chairing the tournament. He remains dedicated to making this event an outstanding success each year. We believe in the noble mission to make a positive impact in the community. Our commitment to move this city forward without leaving anyone behind continues to inspire hope and optimism. Together, we have the power to change lives."

The tournament was a single shotgun format. On-course activities included hole-in-one, closest-to-the-pin and longest-drive competitions. There was also an exciting helicopter ball drop on the 18th hole where numbered golf balls were dropped from a helicopter onto the green and the closest to the pin won.
