The City of Brampton is holding training sessions next month as part of new licensing requirements for fireworks vendors.

On Sept. 14 and Sept. 28, Brampton fire and emergency services, along with bylaw enforcement staff, will lead courses for vendors at the Fire Life Safety Education Building, 225 Central Park Dr. The classes will start at 6 p.m.

Vendors are required to attend at least one session each year if they wish to be licensed to sell fireworks in Brampton.

The move follows a city council decision to tighten rules on fireworks within city limits, in response to severe mishaps in recent years — including a large fire during Diwali celebrations in 2015 that destroyed homes and led to evacuations.

This training is mandatory for vendors who plan to sell fireworks for Diwali, New Year’s Eve, Victoria Day or Canada Day. Completion of this course is compulsory before vendors can be licensed to sell.

The training is held on four dates a year in spring and fall. It will cover the types of fireworks allowed for sale; rules for storing, displaying and selling; customer ID requirements; and safety guidelines for distribution to buyers.

Course registration must be made in person at the Fire Life Safety Education Centre on Central Park Drive. For more information, call 905-874-2740. The cost for registration is $100.

For vendors with multiple locations, at least one operator from each location is required to complete the course.

A certificate of completion of the course must accompany a vendor’s application for a licence to sell fireworks.
