A reader asks: How is the Region planning to prepare for the increased traffic generated around the new hospital on Major Mackenzie Drive?

Th answer from Lloyd Fernandes, senior project manager at Region of York:

The potential improvements to Major Mackenzie Drive between Hwy. 400 and Jane Street include widening the road to provide transit and high occupancy vehicle lanes and enhanced options for cyclists and pedestrians. An environmental assessment (EA) for this project started earlier this year and work is already underway

Through the EA process, York Region will work with residents and stakeholders to determine the specific details for improvements along this section and in front of the new hospital

Construction is planned to occur in stages, beginning in 2021. However, as part of our annual project priority setting, we will re-evaluate the timing of this project and endeavour to have it coincide with the opening of the hospital.

An open house will be scheduled for the fall, with a second open house scheduled for the spring of 2018, and we hope residents can attend to learn more about the project
