Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk put a Notice of Motion on the town table last week that each council meeting begin with a formal acknowledgement of Indigenous peoples.
If approved, each meeting would begin with the following words:
"We would like to begin today's meeting by acknowledging that the Town of Georgina is located over lands originally used and occupied by the First Peoples of the Williams Treaty First Nations and other Indigenous Peoples and thank them for sharing this land.
We would also like to acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our close neighbour and friend."
Currently, each council meeting begins with a minute of meditation prior to agenda matters.
Council will consider the motion at its next meeting Wednesday, Sept. 27.
